Julie Chen: A new look at art

Julie Chen's "Octopus"

I was talking to some art professors yesterday about my dilemma- I'm interested in too many mediums.  As an honors major next year during my last year at Swarthmore, I'll have to focus on reaching some sort of depth rather than trying everything (as I've been doing).  I've always loved 3D, 2D and everything in between. But what if I found a medium that combined it all? My ceramics professor, Syd Carpenter, suggested I look at Julie Chen's book art.  It's illustration, printmaking, sculptural, sewing, painting all at once! How mind blowing is that? I was intrigued.

Still grappling with what I'll end up doing but at least I have next semester and the summer to contemplate.

Eyes on my fingers

Another hand piece.
I'm taking a computer science course right now and it's as if I'm learning a new language. I write programs for my homework in this foreign computer language called "Python." I'm not used to breaking the world down the way  computer science does, but the moment you get the code right and your program works, it's as if everything in the world is right.

It's raining cats and dogs

It rained a bit yesterday but today it's raining pretty hard.  Can't wait to see what umbrellas people are using... when I was in Taiwan, everyone had the coolest umbrellas because you could buy them for really cheap all over the city.  Frilly umbrellas, shiny umbrellas, light umbrellas, wooden framed umbrellas, rainbow umbrellas...

Then again, it rains a lot in Taiwan.  I wonder if there's a really developed umbrella culture out in Seattle, Washington... haha

Okay, here's a doodle I did using hi-liters:
Now I better go and brave the rain!

List Gallery @ Swarthmore

A doodle I did on an old postcard for a List Gallery show.
The List Gallery is open Tues-Sun from 12PM-5PM.
The gallery monitors are all students.
My shift on the weekend is a delight being surrounded by art and all.

Come visit the List Gallery when you're visiting Swarthmore.

Favianna Rodriguez on Wednesday!

So so so excited about this!

Film, repetition, 3rd week!

Taking "visual" notes during class.  I've always been better at paying attention in class when I can doodle.
Sunday's rain brought some all weather which was much welcomed after the hot and muggy nights in my room.
African dance is kicking my butt--literally. My butt is so sore from all the action it's getting!

Went to Bryn Mawr last night to visit the Art Club studio.  Thinking of starting an artists' collective at Swarthmore...

Done with week 1 of the new semester! Monday has come again.
Quote of the week:
"Stop crossing your arms, look up, don't be apologetic for your existence. You're all here for a reason." -African Dance Instructor
